Internal Family Systems and Psychedelic Integration
If you have come back from a psychedelic experience saying that you met a part of yourself you had never met before, you already understand the core insight of Internal Family Systems. People describe a frightened child, a harsh critic, a fierce protector, and underneath all of them a calm, spacious awareness that felt more like who they really are than their ordinary personality does.
IFS gives that a language, and a way of working with it. Rather than treating the parts you met as symptoms to be managed or symbols to be interpreted, we go back and get to know them with curiosity rather than force, in ordinary consciousness, over time. The compassion that arrived on its own during the experience becomes something you can find on purpose afterward.
The same map helps before you go. Difficult experiences are rarely about dose alone; much more often, a protective part has been taken by surprise. If a part of you has spent thirty years making sure you never lose control, and then you take something that loosens control, that part will do what it has always done, and it will do it for good reasons. Preparation means meeting those parts first, with enough safety and support, and asking what they are afraid of rather than trying to override them.
It also helps explain why insight fades. Something arrives during a journey that is completely clear, and within a few weeks it is gone, and that is usually taken as a personal failure. It is not. Usually a protector has stepped back in, because the insight threatened an arrangement it has been keeping in place for a long time. The work is not to remember harder. It is to turn toward the part that needs you to forget, with curiosity, and to find out what it has been guarding.
In 2012 I founded the Zendo Project, MAPS' psychedelic peer support initiative, and later served as MAPS' Director of Harm Reduction, where I sat with people through some of the most intense experiences a psyche can have. I am IFS Level 2 Trained through the IFS Institute. My clinical training at the California Institute of Integral Studies wove together transpersonal psychotherapy and depth psychology, and I worked as a clinician on psilocybin and MDMA trials at the Yale School of Medicine.
I offer this work by secure video to adults and couples throughout California. I do not provide, administer, or source any psychedelic substance. Preparation and integration are established, legal forms of psychotherapy: harm-reduction informed, and meeting you where you are without judgment.
